Well, I decided to go with the trend and try out Xgl and Compiz.
I must say, It is amazing that it can produce the effects it produces with so little overhead. Very impressive. I'm currently running it on my laptop [Fujitsu NB-50L], which is entry level, and is equipped as such, with an Intel i845G Graphics chipset with 8mb of vram [shared 512 MB system RAM]. Even with my modest mobile equipment, Xgl and Compiz deliver effects reminiscent of OS X and the Vista Betas [with the clunky, hoggish Aero Interface].
